I thought that it would be a fun project to customize a makeup look for each fabulous age group that uses Everyday Minerals, and hopefully - depending on what age group you currently find yourself in - you can make good use of my suggestions!

For the fantastic ladies in their 40’s, this is for you.

You’ve enjoyed the self-discovery and exploration of your 20’s, the confidence and sassyness of your 30’s, and are now in your 40’s. I’m all for makeup looks that embrace warm metallics such as bronze and copper in this stage of life - they can warm up your skin tone and are as glamorous as they are elegant. These shades can be paired with everything from a chic cocktail dress for a night out to a casual ensemble of jeans and flats on the weekend... their versatility is truly remarkable. I leave it to you to rock these shades, my wonderful 40’s gals!

FINISHING DUST - This magical dust is a shine-fighter that can be extremely useful for those who develop oily skin in their 40’s. This translucent powder serves to set your makeup and get rid of excess shine.

EVERYDAY BRONZER - I don’t need to tell you that the prolonged sun exposure that you most likely experienced in your teens and 20’s was very damaging to your skin - in your 40’s, you know better. Fake it with this fab bronzer... it provides you with the appearance of a bronze goddess without the sun’s harmful rays!

ALL SMILES BLUSH - I love this rosy matte peach shade paired with any of the following metallic bronze/copper eye shadows!

I DO DECLARE EYE SHADOW - Like a steaming cup of cocoa on a cold day, this sparkling copper shade has rich dark brown hues that will warm up your eyes.

MIDNIGHT MYSTERY EYE SHADOW - Coppery deep undertones with splashes of gold.

FLOURISH EYE SHADOW - A blossoming bronze latticework of glistening shimmer.

Getting
too far under your skin, that is…?

In
esthetics, when we talk about penetration, it is important to specify the level at which a particular substance can penetrate. The level of penetration of a cosmetic formula is directly related to its depth of action as well as the purpose/goal/aim of that formula.

Levels of Percutaneous Penetration:

  • Contact: Where cosmetic formulas make contact with the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, but do not penetrate. Their main action is cleansing the skin and are easily wiped clean. All facial cleansers are considered contact cosmetics. Products from the Sophyto range with contact properties: Purifying Silken CleanserNatural Glycolic Foaming CleanserDual Action Exfoliating Treatment.
  • Impregnation: Where cosmetic formulas stay on the surface of the skin to protect them and/or provide color. These formulas should be easily removed and they do not penetrate the skin. Sunscreens and color cosmetics are some examples of impregnation cosmetics.
  • Absorption: Where some active ingredients can make their way down  into the 12th layer of the stratum corneumto protect them against the environmental aggressors. Day and night moisturizers fall into this category. Products from the Sophyto range with absorption properties: Omega Daily MoisturizerBalancing Daily Moisturizer; Marine Peptide Brightening Treatment.
  • Penetration: Where formulas of small molecular size, such as those containing fat-soluble vitamins and amino acids, can penetrate into the spinous and basal layers of the epidermis. Products from the Sophyto range with penetration properties: pH Optimizing Restorative Toner; Anti Aging Antioxidant SerumMultivitamin Facial Serum and Tocotrienol Super Skin Concentrate.
  • Reabsorption: Where a formula crosses the epidermis and reaches the blood vessels located at the dermal andsubcutaneous level in order to be distributed throughout the body. Substances with such characteristics are considered drugs and not cosmetics.

What’s the difference between a topical drug and a cosmetic?

  • cosmetic is a product that is applied locally and has a local effect.
  • drug (topical) is a product that is applied locally but has a systemic (further reaching) effect.

What’s the deal with penetration enhancers?

A penetration enhancer is, as its name indicates, an agent that improves percutaneous penetration of ingredients to provide fast and long-lasting results. While not all penetration enhancers are toxic per se, it is a fact that they make penetration of toxic/harsh chemicals even easier.

Commonly used penetration enhancers:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Bisabolol
  • Lecithin
  • Anionic Surfactants such as SLS (toxic)
  • Fat-soluble vitamins (Synthetic vitamin A is toxic – if Vitamin A is required, it should ALWAYS be applied in whole food form)
  • AHAs & BHAs  (pH disruptor)
  • Liposomes
  • Microcapsules
  • Micronized particles (toxic)
  • Nanoparticles (toxic)

If a penetration enhancer is to be used, it is important to take two aspects into consideration:

  • The penetration enhancer MUST NOT be toxic.
  • Toxic/harsh ingredients MUST NOT be added to the formula.

As we said before, the so-called ‘selective permeability’ of the skin is not fail-safe. It is important to remember that several commonly used chemicals in skin care do end up in our bloodstream and are carcinogenic, genotoxic, immunotoxicants, endocrine disruptors, etc.

Facilitating the penetration of noxious substances would be a humongous mistake – one that could potentially be extremely detrimental to our health.

Exfoliating

Why you might need it: as skin matures, cell turnover slows down. Exfoliants shift the dead surface cells, which can interfere with the absorption of moisturizers and make foundation look patchy. Blood circulation is stimulated and cell renewal accelerated.

Where, when and how: if your current products contain a natural exfoliant such as Vitamin A , or, fruit acids for example, then an additional exfoliant may not be necessary. If the products you are using do not contain these active ingredients, or, if you suffer from particularly dull skin, exfoliate 2 - 3 times per week using gentle exfoliants such as Dual Action Exfoliating Treatment which contains micro-fine amethyst powder.

Beware of: DO NOT EVER use any of those nasty apricot or ground walnut shell products. Harsh exfoliants like these will make tiny scratches on your skin surface and compromise the natural barrier of the skin, thus inviting bacteria and infection.

Product Tip: try Dual Action Exfoliating Treatment, it will successfully remove grease, debris and micro-wastes from the epidermis and improve circulation. Epidermis sloughing is achieved through the combination of finely ground silky amethyst powder, organic pineapple and cherry juice. Removal of this layer stimulates the lower skin levels to produce healthy, normal levels of skin growth.

THE CAT’S MEOW

Cat’s have 9 lives, right? Well, I think that the cat eye makeup look should live forever.

I’ve always been a huge fan of sexy, matte black cat eye liner. It’s very Brigitte Bardot meets Kate Moss meets Cleopatra. The cool part about cat eye liner is that it can be done in soo many ways. From subtle to over the top!!

Sultry and seductive, cat eyes are just so good. Give me lashes and thick black eyeliner and I’m in heaven. It’s very 60’s but still so modern and chic. I was so happy to see if on the SS 12 runways of Giorgio Armani and Jonathan Saunders.

The best part? It’s super easy to do. All you need is Carina’s genius Black Eyeliner and you’re set. Just wet your eyeliner brush and then dip the tip of the brush into the minerals..instant liquid black liner. Amazing!!!!

Here are some cat eye photos to inspire you..love these.

Ps - keep your blog topic requests coming..leave comments with what you want to see!!

Love, Taylor

It’s a fact... every girl (me included!) wants to have glowing, naturally luminous skin. Unfortunately, due to things we can’t control like dirt in the air and free radicals, sometimes our skin looks less than stellar. Coming home after a long day and realizing your skin looks dull is just the worst!

That is why my
Lucent Face Powders are so amazing... they can instantly brighten and transform your skin in no time. My Lucent Face Powders are some of the most popular EM products, and minimize shine as they illuminate your skin. Their light reflecting properties will give you a radiant glow in no time! Which shade is your fave?

We have Pearl Beige (a neutral shade perfect for those with Fair to Light skin) andNatural (a perfect shade for those with Light to Medium skin tones), in addition to Wet Sand (a neutral sprinkle of shimmer that can be used on all skin tones) and Dusty Miller (a very pale peachy pink with a hint of sparkle that can be used on all skin tones). One of the most popular is Viki’s Radiant Creation, which was created by an Everyday Minerals customer and is a beige shade with a hint of sparkly pink that is perfect for Light to Medium skin tones. Or, if you’re feeling tickled pink, try Light Pink - just as the name says, it’s a luminous soft pink face color with a subtle shimmer. To test out the colours why not try our Glow Kit

The key to my Lucent Face Powders is where to apply them to provide the maximum amount of WOW! Through my experience, the following “face places” are the best to naturally create glowing skin:
  • Middle of forehead and temples
  • Inner corners of eyes
  • Along the center of nose and on the tip of the nose
  • Chin
  • Along the cheekbones
  • Along the jawline
These places will give your face definition and a natural contour.

Another fab product? My
Luminizing Sunlight Powder.

This product provides less shimmer and more anti-shine qualities... it’s yellow based mineral formula also conceals the appearance of redness and gives added subtleties of sheen. It’s totally translucent and is perfect to set your makeup!

Do you have any luminous tips to share, ladies?

Get your brows ship-shape with these expert tips...

Brows that wow!

•Always groom your brows in natural light and use a hand mirror for close-up precision and a large mirror so you can step back and check that they are even.

•Pointed tweezers are more precise; however, it's easier to grab stubborn hairs with a slanted pair. Work with whichever you find easiest.

•Its fine to pluck strays above the eyebrow. Just don't go overboard, and don't tweeze too close to your hairline.

•Your brows should be long, thick and slightly arched. Avoid the tadpole look by going a little at a time, and use your natural shape as an outline."

•For a longer-lasting result, get your brows waxed. Whatever you decide, sometimes it's hard to get an accurate shape at home, so if you don't feel confident about doing them yourself, get them done professionally.

Tip: A technician needs 10 days of brow growth to restore your shape, and a months' worth to start from scratch.

Post-Pluck...

For badly behaved eye brows that will not sit the way you want them to, try to gently comb a gel through your brows to hold hair in place or try a kit such as our Brow Defining Kit.

Three steps to perfect brows

1.Shape: Pull the skin tight and pluck hairs beneath the natural arch, in the direction they are growing, but go easy and keep checking both your eyebrows in the bigger mirror as well, as sometimes if you try to make both exactly the same they don't look great together from a distance.

2.Line up: To determine the inner edge, line up a pencil vertically against one nostril. Your brow should begin where it meets your forehead. And measure again to find where the outside of your brow should end.

3.Define: Hold your eyebrow pencil so it's lying sideways against the brow, then sketch the fine lines of your brow to define them. Experiment with which shade looks best for your eyebrows and complexion. Don't go too dark as it will tend to make your brows overtake your face instead of complimenting it.

Brow dos and don'ts
Do – groom your brows daily
Don't – get rid of the long hairs, as these are what give your brows their shape.
Do – pluck brows after a hot shower when your pores are open – it's less painful
Don't – pluck them during your period, when your skin is particularly sensitive
Do – go and see a professional if you're unsure about what shape to go for

And remember to have fun! :)

Yes, it certainly is. Even swimming or bathing hardly effects it. Your tattoo will be covered the whole day. At the end of the day you simply wipe it off with our gentle, yet highly effective Remover Tonic.
It does not harm or fade your tattoo.

Cat eye makeup was made famous by such stars as Marilyn Monroe & Audrey Hepburn in the old classic Hollywood movies, and more recently by beauties such as Angelina Jolie & Kate Perry.

Applying eyeliner takes some concentration and a well-balanced hand. For beginners the easiest way is to start with an eyeliner pencil. Cat eye makeup is all about your eyeliner application and there are many variations to cat makeup. In order to avoid blotches when applying your cat eyes makeup, you will need to practice.

Our guide to cat eye makeup will help show you the correct way to apply your cat eye makeup.

Your cat eyes makeup look can range from sharp, thin and pointed, to fat, and smudgy. Taking this into account, there are a number of cat eye make up techniques also.

Traditional Cat Eye Makeup Look

For a traditional cat eye look;

You will need to use a sharp eyeliner pencil

begin by dotting along the root of the eyelashes starting at the inner eye and working your way out

you should follow the natural curve of the eye. Stop where your pupil ends and begin to subtly slant your eyeliner line upwards. You can carry this line as far as your like. Quarter of an inch is the most common

This method to cat eye makeup will give you a thin eyeliner line. If you would prefer a fatter line all you have to do is retrace your steps.

Once you have acquired confidence you can try using a liquid eyeliner and brush to create this cat eye look.

If you are looking to create a more translucent finish to your cat eye makeup you should use a shadow liner and brush.

You will need to press the shadow as you move it along your eyelash line. You will move your eyeliner brush in the same slanting upwards motion as you did with the eyeliner pencil

Smoky Cat Eye Makeup

Smoky cat eye makeup is another very popular cat eye make up technique. This look is easier than you think and listed below are the steps to guide you.

First of all to create this look you will need;

a black eyeliner pencil
a black eyeliner brush
an eye shadow brush
dark eye make up
an eyebrow pencil
and black mascara

Steps

Start by using your black eyeliner pencil

Draw a soft line from the corner of your eyelid to the end of your eyelash line

next, you will use your eye shadow brush to apply the dark eye shadow over the top of the smudged eyeliner line to create a smoky look

with your brush eyeliner, make a thick line on your top lid only. Make sure the line is thickest at the outer corner of the eye.

to finish this smoky cat eye makeup, you will use your eyebrow pencil to make your eyebrow curve more pronounced.

finally, apply thin coats of mascara, allowing the coats to dry in between applications.

By following these tips and guidelines, you are sure to create perfect cat eyes makeup.

Tip – When applying your foundation make sure to also apply it to your eyelids and lips as this will help your eye make up and lipstick to go on much smoother and will stay in place for longer.

The good news is that you can do a facial at home with very few ingredients and in just about 20 to 30 minutes.

You will need:
Lukewarm water
Basin
Eye make up remover
Skin cleanser
Exfoliant
Cotton Makeup Pads
Skin toner or Spritzer
Skin mask
Clean towels

Steps
Before you start

Timing
Set about 30 minutes for your facial. Select the place where you will do your facial, preferably your bathroom and maybe when you have your mask on somewhere relaxing to lay down and relax

Organization
Make sure that you have everything that you will need in one place. This is a relaxing activity, so make sure you have everything handy and no last minute rushes.

The Process

    • Submerge two cotton make up pads into cold water as you will use these later, to relax your eyes while the mask is on.

    • Cleanse your Face: Do two cleanses using your skin Cleanser. Make sure that there is no makeup left after your cleanse. Clean gently around your eyes with the Eye Makeup Remover using a circular motion.

    • Exfoliate: Apply your exfoliant with gentle circular movements using your fingertips. Rinse well with water.

    • Toner: Apply toner on your skin using a cotton makeup pad. You can skip this process if you don’t use a toner or spritzer usually, but the toner is great for making sure all your make up has been removed as you will see it on the cotton pad after wiping over your face if you haven’t cleansed thoroughly.

    • The mask: Select your mask according to your skin needs. If you have an oily skin, a purifying mask will be great. If you have dry/normal skin, or in the colder months, a deep moisturizing mask will be better.

     • Apply the mask all over our face avoiding the eye area. Lie down if you like and put some soft music on. Place the cotton pads on your eyes that you prepared earlier. Leave the mask on for about 10 to 15 minutes. Relax and take a load off...you deserve it!

    • Wash the mask off thoroughly with lukewarm water and apply your toner again.

    • Moisturize: Finish your facial by applying your regular moisturizer and eye cream. If you are going to be out in the sun, apply sun protection as well. Your skin should be smooth and plump after your facial. Ready to take on the world again!

    •  Have a calming drink such as a warm decaffeinated tea or just plain water.

Frequency
Depending on your skin type you may do a facial once a week. You should exfoliate twice a week if needed.
